John McLean graduated from Victoria University with a Masters of Arts degree in history and has had a lifelong interest in both New Zealand and British history. Among the books he has written are Sailors and Settlers: the migration of Highlanders from Nova Scotia to New Zealand in the 1850s and 1860s, Voyages of the Pioneers to New Zealand, and A Mission of Honour; the Royal Navy in the Pacific, 1769-1997.
