After grasshoppers ruin the crops, eight-year-old Laura Ingalls and her family leave Plum Creek and move to Burr Oak Iowa, where they experience life in a small town and help manage a hotel.my notes
ForewordThis is a story based on the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder between the winter of 1875 and the fall of 1877. Laura is eight years old when this story begins.
When she grew up and wrote the Little House books about her childhood, Laura Ingalls Wilder did not write about this period of time in her life. In the series, the Ingalls family moves directly from the banks of Plum Creek (the fourth book) to the shores of Silver Lake (the fifth). But in real life, in between these times, Laura actually lived with her family in a small town in Iowa called Burr Oak.
In her many years as a writer, Laura Ingalls Wilder penned only a dozen pages about this part of her life, and those pages were never published.
Still, she always remembered Burr Oak as “a lovely place” and many good things happened to her there. I was asked to write about this time of her life.
Relying on Mrs Wilder’s few written memories and on the wonderful spirit that lives in all of her books, I have crafted this “lost” story.
It is for Laura
