This text is leveled at Turquoise 2. When she joins the school kapa haka group, Marama feels nervous but is supported by her older sister and Whaea Mere. Marama practises hard at school and at home. When the Kapa Haka group performs at the school prize giving, she is allowed to wear her nan's pounamu. She enjoys the kapa haka group and learns to overcome her nervousness.
This story reinforces the importance of kapa haka for students within the life of the school. It includes some Te reo Māori that will be in the oral vocabulary of most readers, and that is well supported by the context and illustrations. This story introduces some aspects of tikanga (customs), for example, the passing down of precious taonga (family treasures).

The Ready to Read series provides core instructional materials to support the literacy learning of students in years 1-3 (Levels 1-2 of English in The New Zealand Curriculum). The aims of the Ready to Read series are to develop confident and proficient readers and writers who can apply their literacy skills across the curriculum and achieve academic success. All texts are trialed and leveled according to the Ready to Read color wheel. There are nine color segments beginning with Magenta (the emergent level), followed by Red, Yellow, Blue, Green (the early levels) and Orange, Turquoise, Purple and Gold (the fluency levels).
