The dust jacket unfolds into a poster. The poster is a chromolithograph (c. 1900) by William Shaw Diedrich Schmidt. The birds in Schmidt's work were based on the artwork of J.G. Keulemans in Walter Buller's A history of the birds of New Zealand This book reproduces the plates from Walter Buller's original History of the Birds of New Zealand (first edition, second edition and supplement) with a new introduction and foreword. This book is almost identical to the original Te Papa Press edition from 2012, but the format is smaller and the text extracts from Walter Buller have been removed.
