Summary: NSWED LS 1992 09
Set in a small farming community in New Zealand this sensitive novel traces a young girl's progress towards maturity as she struggles with the decision to leave her beloved valley for University in the city. The close-knit feeling of rural life is well presented and while Penny is drawn to its apparent security she comes to see that its traditional patterns allow no room for personal growth. The people of the snow country have their human faults and frailties; the idyll has to be balanced with reality. Diana Noonan has recreated the wild beauty of the area and defined the girl's poetic response to it in a natural way
